Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to Meet AASU on Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee Recommendations
Guwahati, 25th September: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to meet the leadership of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on September 26 to deliberate on the Justice Biplab Kumar Sarma Committee recommendations. The meeting, scheduled for 3 PM at the Chief Minister’s office, will include key AASU representatives like the president, general secretary, and chief advisors.
This meeting marks the beginning of a broader initiative, with weekly discussions planned between the government and AASU over the next three to four months. The Chief Minister has emphasized that AASU’s involvement is critical, ensuring transparent dialogue as the government moves toward implementing the recommendations.
The Chief Minister had earlier announced the government’s intent to implement 57 out of 67 recommendations from the committee’s report. Of these, 52 recommendations fall within the state’s jurisdiction, while five to six are part of the concurrent list. The remaining recommendations would require constitutional amendments.
The core issues addressed in the recommendations are land, language, and cultural preservation, with some policies ready for immediate implementation in the Barak Valley. Weekly consultations with AASU will ensure a smooth rollout for the others, aiming to implement 52 of the suggestions by Bohag Bihu next year. Broader discussions will involve consultations with communities from Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, and the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR).
Language policy decisions will be finalized after consultations with Barak Valley and Sixth Schedule area representatives, while other regions will see these policies implemented soon.
