Nagaland Government Prohibits Gau Dhwaj Yatra Amid Fears of Public Disturbances

Northeast Desk, 26th September: The government of Nagaland has officially banned the Gau Dhwaj Yatra, an event promoting a ban on cow slaughter, in key districts due to concerns over potential public disorder. The prohibition applies to Dimapur, Chumoukidema, and Niuland districts, following directives from the State Government based on Article 371(A) of the Indian Constitution, which grants special protection to Nagaland’s cultural practices.

The order, signed by Kevithuto Sophie, the Commissioner of Police and District Magistrate of Dimapur, was issued on September 26. Authorities across various levels, including the Home Commissioner and Director General of Police, have been instructed to enforce the ban and take necessary precautions to prevent unrest.

Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, the spiritual leader spearheading the yatra, voiced frustration after being denied entry into Nagaland, lamenting that his message of cow protection was being obstructed. He urged the Chief Ministers of Northeastern states to engage in open discussions on the controversial issues of cow slaughter, instead of imposing restrictions on his journey.

The ban is seen as a protective measure by the Nagaland government to avoid clashes with indigenous groups, many of whom view the cow differently from other parts of India, considering it a regular part of their diet.
