Assam: Dhubri Court Sentences Four for Murder of Sahid Ali
Dhubri, 27th September: In a significant ruling, the Additional District and Sessions Judge of Dhubri has sentenced four individuals for their roles in the brutal murder of local resident Sahid Ali, which occurred on December 10, 2013.
Two of the accused, Kalam Sheikh and Sobur Ali, have been sentenced to life imprisonment, while Sorhab Ali and Anowar Hussain have received rigorous imprisonment along with fines. The court found them guilty of participating in a violent attack during a family dispute that resulted in Ali’s death.
According to Dinesh Choudhary, the Additional Public Prosecutor, the assailants—who included Sona Ullah Seikh, Akhtar Ali, Kalam Sheikh, Sobur Ali, Sorhab Ali, Idrish Ali, and Anowar Hussain—mercilessly assaulted Sahid Ali with sharp objects, inflicting severe injuries. The attack not only claimed Ali’s life but also led to the vandalization of his home and those of his relatives, causing unrest in the community.
Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed by Sarbesh Ali, a relative of the victim, at the Dhubri Bazar Town Out Post.
After nearly a decade of legal proceedings, justice was served on September 27, during the hearing of Sessions Case No. 159/2016. While Kalam Sheikh and Sobur Ali received life sentences, Sorhab Ali and Anowar Hussain were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. Sona Ullah Seikh, Akhtar Ali, and Idrish Ali were acquitted due to insufficient evidence against them.
The verdict has provided a sense of relief and closure for Sahid Ali’s family, who have long awaited justice. This outcome marks a significant step forward in addressing violence and criminal acts in the region, reinforcing the importance of accountability in the legal system.
