Assam: Harassment Allegations Against Loan recovery agents Over Loan Repayments in Dudhnai

Dudhnai, September 28, 2024 In a disturbing case of alleged harassment, North East Small Finance Bank has come under fire for reportedly pressuring the family of Lakheshwar Kalita, a resident of Lela Baniapara, over missed loan payments. The bank is accused of visiting Kalita’s household, both during the day and late at night, to demand overdue instalments, aggravating the family’s already fragile financial situation.

Kalita had taken a loan of Rs 2 lakh from the bank, and despite ongoing financial hardships, his family had been adhering to the repayment schedule. In an effort to stabilize their income, Kalita relocated to Hyderabad for work, leaving his wife and child behind in Dudhnai.

However, after missing two instalments due to worsening financial conditions, the bank allegedly resorted to aggressive recovery tactics. According to Kalita’s wife, two employees, identified as Harivilas Boro and Disha Roy, were among those who visited their home, even late at night, to demand immediate payment.

Fearing for her safety, Kalita’s wife approached the Dudhnai police station with her child, seeking protection from the continued harassment. Speaking to local media, she expressed that the unrelenting pressure from the bank had caused her severe distress, despite her assurances that the dues would be cleared soon.

The case has raised serious concerns about the recovery practices of financial institutions, especially when dealing with economically vulnerable families. Local authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the matter to ensure that the rights of the Kalita family are upheld and that appropriate action is taken against the bank if misconduct is confirmed.
