Northeast Desk, 30th September: At the 128th birth anniversary observance of Manipur freedom fighter Hijam Irabot, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh expressed deep concern over the abduction of two youths by suspected Kuki militants. Addressing the media at Irawat Square, Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Singh reassured the public that both the state and central governments are working tirelessly to ensure their safe release.

Singh confirmed that one youth had already been freed, but two others remain missing, leaving their families in distress. “The situation is deeply unfortunate,” the Chief Minister stated, adding that the Director General of Police (DGP) had been deployed to negotiate with the involved parties to expedite the rescue process.

He urged the victims’ families to remain calm, assuring them that the authorities are fully dedicated to their safe return. Singh highlighted that both the state and central administrations are committed to resolving the situation swiftly and peacefully.

Reflecting on the legacy of Hijam Irabot, Singh encouraged the younger generation to draw inspiration from his life, particularly his efforts to foster unity among Manipur’s diverse communities. “Irabot’s contributions in the social, political, and economic spheres, along with his role in the freedom struggle, are monumental,” Singh noted, urging citizens to work towards realizing Irabot’s vision of unity and emotional integrity.

Hijam Irabot was not only a stalwart in the fight against British colonialism but also a key political figure in Manipur. He was a founding leader of the Communist Party of India in the state and a champion of social justice, particularly for marginalized communities, with significant contributions to literature and sports.
