Tripura Law Enforcement Reports Significant Crime Reduction and Increased Arrests
Northeast Desk, 30th September: Tripura’s law enforcement has made notable advancements in combating crime, as highlighted by Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan following a review meeting with Chief Minister Manik Saha. The state has experienced a tenfold increase in the arrests of border touts and actions against approximately 300,000 anti-social elements over the past three years.
DGP Ranjan reported that overall crime figures have dropped significantly, stating, “In 2014, the overall crime figure was 4,026, and as of August 2024, it stands at 2,700.” This marks the lowest crime rate in a decade, despite a growing population.
The crackdown on criminal activities has produced impressive results: crimes against women have decreased from 2,700 to 1,500 cases, and incidents of physical violence have reduced from 2,800 to 2,500.
Addressing drug-related issues, DGP Ranjan noted that Tripura boasts the highest narcotics seizure rate in the Northeast. The number of cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has surged from 83 to 512, reflecting enhanced enforcement efforts.
Border security remains a key focus, with a reported 10% increase in the arrest of touts involved in facilitating illegal crossings. Over the past three years, approximately 2,000 individuals have been detained for illegal infiltration.
Chief Minister Saha underscored the necessity of maintaining law and order, especially with upcoming festivals. “There will be no compromise with law and order. We must ensure a peaceful Durga Puja and take action against extortion,” DGP Ranjan relayed.
The police force’s proactive measures include preventive actions against 170,000 individuals from 2022 to 2024, with prosecution reports submitted for over 100,000 people.
As Tripura strengthens its security framework, DGP Ranjan assured that “all senior police officers are on the ground,” collaborating closely with central agencies and border forces to enhance public safety further.
