Assam Government Pushes for Classical Language Status for Assamese
Guwahati, 1st October: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on October 1 that the state government is actively engaging with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central government to secure classical language status for Assamese. Utilizing his X handle, CM Sarma emphasized the significance of this initiative, asserting that Assamese deserves a distinctive place within the linguistic heritage of India.
Sarma outlined that the proposal to recognize Assamese as a classical language will extend beyond the recommendations put forth by the Justice Biplab Sharma Committee. He expressed optimism that Prime Minister Modi would seriously consider this request, underscoring the importance of elevating the status of the Assamese language. In his post, Sarma stated, “We are in regular contact with Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government to recognize Assamese as a classical language. This proposal will also go beyond the recommendations of the Justice Biplab Sharma Committee report and help the Assamese language achieve a unique place. I am sure that Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi will give serious consideration to our request.”
This push for recognition comes on the heels of another significant announcement by the Chief Minister in July, when he revealed that for the first time, all questions in the Combined Civil Service Examination (Main) will be available in Assamese in addition to English. This decision by the Assam Public Service Commission is aimed at enhancing accessibility for Assamese-speaking candidates and marks a historic step in the region’s educational framework.
The initiative to promote Assamese reflects the state government’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich linguistic and cultural heritage, as it seeks to ensure that Assamese is recognized as a classical language in India.
