Assam Government Approves Renaming of Sub-Districts as Co-Districts

Guwahati, 2nd October: The Assam government has officially approved the renaming of newly created “sub-districts” to “co-districts” with immediate effect. The decision nullifies previous notifications issued by the government, specifically ECF.No 374321/6 dated September 12, 2023, and ECF.No 458412/76 dated September 28, 2024.

In line with the updated directive, officials overseeing these co-districts will now be titled Co-District Commissioners (CDC). Furthermore, the regional terminology will also change, with co-districts being referred to as “Xama-Zilla” in Assamese, while the Co-District Commissioner will be known as “Xama-Zilla Aayukta.”

The move reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline administrative processes and better integrate regional language into official designations, ensuring improved governance and closer ties with local communities.
