Arunachal Administration Mistakenly Refers to Gandhi Jayanti as Death Anniversary
Northeast Desk, 2nd October: In an embarrassing oversight, the administration of Arunachal Pradesh’s Leparada district mistakenly referred to Gandhi Jayanti as the death anniversary of *Mahatma Gandhi. The error occurred in a statement issued by *Incharge Deputy Commissioner Oter Gao, which invited members of various organizations to a gathering intended to honor the legacy of Gandhi.
The invitation for the “Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha” incorrectly described October 2 as the “Death Anniversary” of the Father of the Nation. The statement read, “With reference to the subject cited above, the undersigned cordially invites all executive members of your esteemed organization to the ‘Sarva Dharma Prarthana Sabha’—a gathering of people from different religious communities to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his Death Anniversary—2nd October 2024 at MK Multi Purpose Hall, Basar at 0800 hrs. A cleanliness drive, as part of Shramdaan activities of the Swachhata Hi Seva, will also be carried out in and around the above-mentioned venue before the program.”
*Gandhi Jayanti, celebrated annually on October 2, marks the birth of Mahatma Gandhi and is observed nationwide as a national holiday to honor his contributions to India’s independence and the *Swachh Bharat Mission.
This blunder raises concerns about the district administration’s awareness and understanding of significant national events, particularly given Gandhi’s importance in Indian history. As of now, the district administration has not issued any clarification or apology regarding the mistake.
