Northeast Desk, 2nd October:The Meghalaya government is facing delays in rolling out a proposed QR code tracking system for products under the Excise Department, with the initiative aimed at generating Rs 500 crore in revenue from liquor sales this financial year still pending. This decision was initially approved during a cabinet meeting on September 25.
Kyrmen Shylla, the Excise Minister, addressed the media, stating that the implementation of the QR code system, which incorporates holograms to prevent revenue leakages, has not met expectations. He emphasized the need for the Excise Department to expedite the process, noting that the costs associated with adopting this technology would ultimately be passed on to consumers.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma previously announced on his X handle that the new system would feature a QR code hologram on all liquor bottles sold in the state. This measure is designed to facilitate real-time tracking of excise functionalities, making it easier for authorities to monitor each bottle’s journey from production to sale.
“The QR code will help provide real-time updates on stock, production, and sales, and will also assist in tracking the revenue generated from these sales,” Sangma stated, highlighting the system’s potential to enhance transparency and efficiency within the Excise Department.
As the government seeks to implement this technology, stakeholders await further developments on its launch and effectiveness in curbing illicit trade and increasing state revenue.
