Assam: Elephant Found Dead in Manas National Park Due to Solar Fence Incident

Guwahati, 2nd October: An elephant was discovered dead in the Bhuyanpara range of Manas National Park on *October 1, raising serious concerns about wildlife safety in the region. The elephant is believed to have died after coming into contact with a poorly maintained *solar fence.

Local sources reported that the exact time of the elephant’s death is unclear, but it is suspected to have occurred during the previous night. A resident from the area expressed frustration over the incident, attributing it to the improper setup of the solar fencing and a lack of vigilance from authorities.

“The person responsible for the solar fence should have been more careful,” the resident remarked. “Had forest officials been on duty or guarding the area, this tragedy might have been avoided.” They emphasized that while forest officials are diligent during the day in patrolling the park and restricting human activities, there is a noticeable absence of oversight at night.

“You can’t even approach the forest in daylight without being noticed, let alone cut wood, as forest officials keep a strict watch. Yet at night, not a single guard is in sight,” the resident added, highlighting the need for improved nighttime monitoring to protect the park’s wildlife.

The incident underscores the challenges faced by wildlife conservation efforts in the area, as well as the critical importance of effective management of solar fencing to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
