Meghalaya Government Approves Umroi Airport Upgrade Proposal

Northeast Desk, 3rd October: The Meghalaya government has officially approved a proposal by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to upgrade Umroi Airport, a move expected to significantly improve regional air connectivity and boost development in the area.

The announcement was made during a hearing at the Meghalaya High Court, where the government confirmed its compliance with the AAI’s requirements, as outlined in a letter dated September 27, 2024. Nitesh Mozika, the Deputy Solicitor General representing the AAI, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and requested an eight-week period to finalize the proposal for submission to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The court acknowledged this approval as a crucial step towards expanding the airport, scheduling a follow-up hearing for October 24. The previous plans to extend the runway were abandoned due to impracticalities, with the estimated cost exceeding ₹7,000 crore, mainly because it involved removing adjacent hills.
