Manipur: Mob Storms Ukhrul Police Station, Three Killed
Northeast Desk, 3rd October: A mob stormed a police station in Ukhrul town, looting arms amid an ongoing clash between two groups, officials reported on Thursday. The violence, sparked over a land dispute during a ‘Swachhata Abhiyan’ cleaning initiative on Wednesday, left three people dead and 20 others injured.
The attack on the police station occurred while the gunfight between the two groups of the Naga community was underway. The mob, mostly composed of youths, stormed the police station at Wino Bazar and made away with government weapons. The exact number and types of weapons looted remain unclear as the investigation continues, but unofficial sources claim the looted items include AK-47 and INSAS rifles.
In response to the escalating violence, authorities imposed prohibitory orders and suspended mobile internet services in Ukhrul. This incident marks the first reported looting of a police station in a Naga-majority area, in contrast to previous incidents in Manipur involving Meitei and Kuki communities amid ongoing ethnic strife.
