New Substation Inaugurated in Meghalaya to Boost Power Supply in South West Garo Hills

Northeast Desk, 3rd October: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the newly constructed 33/11KV, 2X2.5 MVA Rerapara (Damalgre) Substation on Thursday, in a ceremony attended by Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal, MLAs Subir Marak, and Sanjay A Sangma.

The project, which received funding from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), was developed at a cost of ₹6.19 crore. Its establishment aims to provide a stable power supply to Damalgre and its surrounding villages, addressing the longstanding issues of power interruptions in the area.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Sangma dedicated the project to the local community, emphasizing its potential to enhance the region’s economic landscape. “The establishment of this substation will not only ensure a reliable power supply but will also reduce interruptions significantly,” he stated. He further noted that improved power availability would foster a conducive environment for local economic activities, such as the establishment of processing units, ultimately creating job opportunities and bolstering the rural economy.

Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal added that the new substation would help decrease Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses and fortify the power distribution network in the region.

The newly commissioned substation is equipped with two 2.5 MVA power transformers, a control room, and a staff barrack, designed to meet the power demands of Damalgre and its neighboring areas. Before this development, power supply to regions such as Damalgre, Melim, Dengnakpara, Okkapara, Grenggandi, Rongbakgre, and others was reliant on a long single circuit 11 KV line from the Gongglanggre substation near Garobadha, leading to frequent power interruptions.

The commissioning of the 33/11 KV substation at Rerapara marks a significant advancement in improving the power supply infrastructure and is expected to drastically reduce outages in the area.
