Prohibitory Orders Imposed in Tripura’s Kadamtala After Communal Clash Over Durga Puja Subscription
Northeast Desk, 7th October: The Tripura government has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in the Kadamtala region of North Tripura following violent clashes between two communities over forceful Durga Puja subscription demands. The incident escalated into widespread unrest, prompting authorities to enforce restrictions on public gatherings and movements in the area.
The Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dharmanagar, Sajal Debnath, issued the order after receiving a report from the Superintendent of Police (SP) for North Tripura, which indicated that the situation posed a significant threat to public safety. The order, effective from October 6 to October 9, prohibits any assembly of five or more people, carrying weapons or objects that could be used as weapons, public meetings, rallies, and movement of more than two vehicles together within the Kadamtala Police Station’s jurisdiction.
According to police sources, the conflict began when a Muslim family traveling to Silchar, Assam, for medical treatment was stopped by a Durga Puja organizer, who demanded a large sum of money. A heated altercation ensued, leading to a scuffle. Following the incident, members of the Muslim community protested in front of the local police station, demanding action against the Puja organizer. The police have since arrested one individual in connection with the altercation.
However, tensions escalated further when unidentified miscreants attacked the local market, vandalizing shops and setting some on fire. Security forces, including the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Tripura State Rifles, and Tripura Police, were deployed to maintain law and order in the region. Authorities resorted to a mild lathi charge to disperse the mob and restore calm. Some security personnel were reportedly attacked during the operation.
“The situation remains tense, but under control,” a police officer confirmed. The government has urged the public to cooperate with the authorities as efforts to restore peace continue in the affected areas.
