Sikkim’s First Tree Library Inaugurated at Khechuperi Senior Secondary School in Gyalshing
Northeast Desk, 8th October: In a pioneering initiative, a Tree Library was inaugurated at Khechuperi Senior Secondary School in Gyalshing district, Sikkim, on October 8, marking a significant step towards promoting reading and environmental awareness among students. The event coincided with the conclusion of the Sampoornata Abhiyan programme, a holistic initiative aimed at community development.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Yishey D Yongda, District Collector of Gyalshing, who was the chief guest, alongside other dignitaries including Munna Singh, Commandant of 72 Bn SSB Yuksam, CS Subba, SDM Yuksam, and Laden Gensapa, Joint Director of the Cooperation Department. The event witnessed the participation of local leaders, school staff, students, School Management Committee (SMC) members, Anganwadi workers, Self Help Groups (SHGs), and other stakeholders.
The Tree Library, the first of its kind in the district, aims to cultivate a reading culture among students by providing a wide range of books that encourage self-improvement, goal-setting, and healthier lifestyles. District Collector Yongda emphasized that the library will serve as an important tool in preventing substance abuse among young people by promoting mental stimulation and emotional well-being through reading.
In addition to the library’s inauguration, the mobile Common Service Centre (CSC) of the Cooperation Department was also launched. This initiative is expected to improve access to government services, especially in remote areas.
The event featured several exhibitions, including stalls set up by SHGs, showcasing healthy foods, local crafts, and information on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme. A health camp was also organized by the District Hospital Gyalshing and PHSC Thingling medical staff, offering essential health services to the community.
Addressing the attendees, Yongda highlighted the critical role education plays in shaping the future and commended the school for enhancing its infrastructure with the addition of the Tree Library. She also encouraged the community to embrace the health benefits of the Moringa plant, promoting it as a superfood for a healthier lifestyle.
The event concluded with the Sampoornata Abhiyan – Samapan Samaroh, where letters of appreciation were presented to the Block Level Officers of the Aspirational Block, Chongrang, in recognition of their dedicated efforts.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks, appreciating the collaborative efforts of the school, local authorities, and the community in making the event a success.
