Manipur Clears Over 50 Hectares of Phumdis from Loktak Lake in Six Weeks
Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister has lauded the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) for their successful removal of over 50 hectares of phumdis (floating biomass) from Loktak Lake in just six weeks. Using 8 to 10 hydraulic excavators with long booms, the LDA made significant progress in preserving the health of Northeast India’s largest freshwater lake.
Loktak Lake plays a critical role in the region’s ecosystem and economy, and this clearing operation is expected to benefit the lake’s overall health and support the livelihoods of local communities.
Coinciding with the ongoing 70th Wildlife Week celebrations, a program titled “The Importance of Loktak Lake, a Ramsar Site” was held to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. Organized by the Bishnupur Forest Division and the LDA at Sendra, the event emphasized the lake’s ecological importance and the need for sustainable practices.
LDA Chairman M. Asnikumar Singh, Divisional Forest Officer Waikhom Romabai Devi, and other dignitaries participated in the event, which highlighted the increasing threats posed by climate change and human activities to Loktak’s biodiversity, putting rare species at risk.
