Assam CM Reaffirms Commitment to Empowering Girls on International Day of the Girl Child

Guwahati: On the occasion of International Day of the Girl Child, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the state’s commitment to empowering girls and fostering their growth and development.

In his address, CM Sarma expressed pride in Assam’s daughters, stating, “Celebrating our girls today, tomorrow, and every day! Our girls are dear to us.”

Highlighting the significance of the day, he reiterated the government’s dedication to creating a safe, secure, and prosperous future for all girls in the state.

He said, “Our daughters are our pride—empowering the goddesses within. Girls are the embodiment of the Goddess herself. They are Lakshmi, the bringer of prosperity; they are Saraswati, the source of wisdom.”

The Chief Minister affirmed Assam’s commitment to protecting and uplifting girls, whom he referred to as “precious gifts of nature.”

To mark this important occasion, CM Sarma outlined several government initiatives, including the Nijut Moina Scheme, which provides financial support for girls’ education.

This initiative aims to prevent child marriage by ensuring girls complete their education and pursue their dreams. The scheme reflects Assam’s proactive approach to empowering girls through education.

Additionally, CM Sarma announced the passage of the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Bill, 2024, designed to prevent child marriage, ensure proper consent, and protect women’s rights.

He pledged unwavering support to Assam’s daughters, declaring, “I will always stand by my daughters, ensuring they are safe, valued, and given the wings to soar.”

The International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, highlights the challenges faced by girls globally and advocates for gender equality in education, protection from violence, and access to rights and opportunities.

Since its inception in 2012, this day has raised awareness of the need to empower girls and integrate their potential into development policy and programming.
