Guwahati: Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi commemorated his father, the late Tarun Gogoi, on the occasion of his 90th birth anniversary, reflecting on the profound impact his father had on Assam’s political landscape.
In a heartfelt post on social media platform X, Gaurav highlighted how his father’s values continue to guide him, stating, “His values continue to guide me at every step.”
Tarun Gogoi, who served as Assam’s Chief Minister from 2001 to 2016, is widely remembered for steering the state through a turbulent period marked by militant violence and political instability.
He played a crucial role in implementing the Assam Accord of 1985, which was pivotal in modernizing and revitalizing the state.
Under his leadership, Assam saw remarkable progress in fostering communal harmony and development. His political acumen allowed him to negotiate successfully with militant groups, leading many to renounce violence and integrate into mainstream society.
Gaurav noted that his father’s dedication to peace and progress would be remembered for generations.
Born in 1936 at the Rangajan Tea Estate in Jorhat, Tarun Gogoi came from an ethnic Assamese Tai-Ahom family. After completing his education at Jagannath Barooah College and Gauhati University, he embarked on a political career that saw him rise to national prominence.
He served as Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee under Indira Gandhi, before returning to Assam to lead the Congress party to three consecutive electoral victories.
During his tenure, Tarun Gogoi’s government achieved significant improvements in sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
His leadership brought industrial growth and enhanced social welfare programs, transforming Assam into a model of development.
Gaurav Gogoi, following in his father’s footsteps, continues his legacy as a prominent Congress leader and Member of Parliament.
