Durga Puja Festivities in Assam Marred by Fatal Road Accidents
Guwahati: As Assam celebrates the vibrant festival of Durga Puja, the festivities have been overshadowed by a spate of fatal road accidents across the state, leading to multiple deaths and several injuries.
In Guwahati’s Zoo Road, a serious accident occurred when a four-wheeler collided with a scooty, leaving a young rider critically injured. Swift action by local residents led to the victim being rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for immediate treatment. The accident caused tensions in the area, necessitating police intervention to maintain order.
In Golaghat, a high-speed motorcycle crash claimed the life of Biren Thakur on Friday night. Thakur was crossing the road to witness the Durga Puja festivities when he was struck by a motorcycle ridden by Lohit Pradhan, who sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a local hospital.
Meanwhile, in Barpeta, a motorcycle returning from Durga Puja celebrations crashed into a railing, resulting in the deaths of Nishant Pathak and Kishan Sharma. The incident has cast a pall over the festive mood in the region.
In Bongaigaon’s Jogighopa, a wedding party vehicle lost control during a U-turn, leading to the tragic death of Ziarul Haque, with several others injured. Jogighopa also reported another fatality when cyclist Gautam Rabha was killed in a collision with a motorcycle, succumbing to his injuries while being transported to a medical facility.
These tragic incidents have prompted authorities to call for stricter road safety measures during the festive period, as communities across Assam mourn the lives lost.
