Assam Olympic Association Revamps Leadership and Outlines Vision for Sporting Excellence

Guwahati: In a major stride towards bolstering Assam’s sporting framework, state ministers Pijush Hazarika and Jayanta Mallabaruah were nominated as vice-presidents of the newly restructured Assam Olympic Association (AOA).

The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the AOA’s recently appointed Executive Committee, where several strategic initiatives were laid out to elevate the state’s presence in national and international sports, including future Olympic Games.

The meeting marked a pivotal moment for Assam’s athletic aspirations, with the nomination of ministers Hazarika and Mallabaruah to senior vice-presidential roles.

Their inclusion is seen as a move to bring stronger leadership and resources to the organization. Additionally, Shantanu Ranjan Saikia was appointed as an executive member, reinforcing the committee’s efforts to steer the association’s new vision.

One of the significant resolutions passed during the session was the formation of a Talent Hunt Working Group. This initiative, comprising accomplished athletes with national and international recognition, aims to identify and develop emerging sports talent across Assam.

The AOA emphasized that this would ensure local athletes are better equipped and more competitive for upcoming championships, paving the way for future success on larger platforms.

The committee also turned its attention to India’s aspirations to host the 2035 Olympic Games, with discussions on how Assam could contribute to this national effort.

The association pledged comprehensive support for local athletes, aiming to strengthen the state’s sporting infrastructure to play a crucial role in India’s Olympic bid.

AOA officials stressed the importance of cultivating a strong foundation, which would position Assam as a key player in the pursuit of the 2035 Olympics.

Adding to the celebratory spirit of Assam’s sports culture, the Executive Committee announced the launch of the Assam Olympic Award Ceremony.

This annual event will honor the achievements of exceptional athletes, with the award named in tribute to boxing icon Lovlina Borgohain. Borgohain, who has brought global recognition to Assam, was chosen to symbolize the state’s athletic prowess and determination.

In another progressive step, the AOA revealed plans to host the Assam Youth Olympic Games, an event designed to inspire and develop young athletes.

Through this initiative, the association hopes to foster a new generation of sporting talent, motivating youth to take up sports and contribute to the state’s athletic future.

The restructuring of the Assam Olympic Association and the unveiling of these initiatives underscore the state’s commitment to enhancing its sporting landscape.

By focusing on talent development, infrastructure improvements, and strategic leadership, Assam is setting the stage for a brighter sporting future, aspiring to make a mark on the national and international stage.
