Meghalaya Seeks Rs 600 Crore from Centre to Boost Social Welfare Initiatives

Shillong: The Meghalaya government has requested Rs 600 crore in financial aid from the Central government to enhance the operations and efficiency of the state’s social welfare department.

The announcement was made by Paul Lyngdoh, Minister in charge of the department, on October 14, following a review of the directorate’s functioning and funding.

Highlighting the need for additional support, Lyngdoh emphasized that multiple issues require attention from both the state cabinet and five central ministries.

The minister noted a projected deficit of Rs 600 crore, underlining the need for improved service conditions, especially for employees working on a contractual basis, including those on night shifts.

Lyngdoh’s proposed interventions aim to enhance facilities for staff, ensuring they can provide optimal service. He expressed a desire to see better working conditions, such as accommodation for those on night duty, to improve overall service quality.

During his review, the minister also inspected the women and child helplines at the social welfare directorate. He praised the efficient handling of cases by tech-savvy personnel, who work around the clock in 8-hour shifts. He highlighted the sensitive nature of cases, ensuring that female officers manage distress calls received at night to provide appropriate support.

Lyngdoh was particularly pleased with the high success rate of the child helpline, which has resolved 90% of cases.

He noted that the dashboard is continuously updated with information from various districts, reflecting the department’s ongoing efforts.

Despite challenges, Lyngdoh emphasized the positive developments in Meghalaya, pointing out the dedication of young men and women who work tirelessly to assist those in need.

He cited examples of how the department swiftly responds to cases of domestic violence, providing immediate support and intervention to affected individuals.
