Assam University Professor and Wife Exchange Serious Allegations of Abuse and Violence
Guwahati: A troubling situation has emerged at Assam University’s Diphu campus, where a professor and his wife have each filed complaints against one another, alleging serious offenses, including attempted murder and domestic violence.
According to a senior police officer, the conflict escalated on October 6 when the professor’s wife, who teaches Hindi, accused her husband of physically assaulting her.
The allegations extend to the professor also attacking her elderly father, who intervened to protect her during the incident.
Both complaints were filed at the Diphu police station, resulting in the registration of two cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Following her husband’s alleged abuse, the wife reached out to the Assam State Commission for Women, asserting that she faced ongoing harassment.
The commission has since taken cognizance of the situation, further complicating the matter.
In addition to the couple’s allegations, reports have surfaced regarding a statement purportedly written by several female students at the campus.
They claim to have experienced physical and sexual abuse by the professor. However, police officials have stated they cannot take action based on anonymous complaints, and no official complaints have been lodged by any students.
Currently, the university is closed for Durga Puja vacations, and authorities have expressed unawareness of the ongoing situation.
The development has raised concerns within the academic community about safety and conduct on campus, highlighting the need for thorough investigations into the allegations.
