Nagaland Considers Partial Lifting of Toll Gate Ban with Strict Regulations, Says Zhaleo Rio

Kohima: The Nagaland government is considering a partial lifting of the toll gate ban in select areas under strict regulations, according to Zhaleo Rio, Adviser for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs.

During an event in Chümoukedima where sanitation vehicles were distributed to urban local bodies, Rio addressed the media, explaining that while the state had previously imposed a blanket ban on toll gates, discussions with higher authorities have opened the door for a more strategic approach.

He noted that lifting the ban could happen at key locations, but with stringent rules in place to manage and regulate their operation. However, he did not specify a timeline for when this decision would come into effect.

On the issue of road infrastructure in Dimapur, Rio acknowledged that several areas require complete reconstruction. He mentioned that some repair work is currently underway but has been delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions.

One of the major projects affected by these delays is the much-anticipated roadwork along Tajen Ao Road, stretching from the Clock Tower to the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Rio also clarified that certain roads, such as the stretch from Dilai Gate to Dhobinala, fall under the jurisdiction of the National Highway Authority, making them outside the direct responsibility of the state’s Urban Development Department.

In addressing the issue of single-use plastic bottles, Rio emphasized the government’s commitment to phasing out plastic waste. He noted that bottling companies had been granted a limited extension to clear their existing stock of plastic bottles.

However, he made it clear that no further extensions would be provided, signaling a firm stance on reducing the environmental impact of plastic in the state.

These discussions and decisions reflect the Nagaland government’s efforts to balance infrastructure development with regulatory enforcement and environmental concerns.
