Assam’s Poverty Rates Plummet as Government Initiatives Prove Effective

Guwahati: In a significant announcement on October 17, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that over 80 lakh people in the state have successfully risen above multidimensional poverty in recent years.

His comments coincided with the observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, underscoring the government’s commitment to improving living standards for its citizens.

During his address, Sarma outlined the various initiatives that have contributed to this positive shift, stating, “A comprehensive net of policies—Orunodoi, free foodgrains, free treatment, subsidized medicines, and housing with water connections—has played a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for the people of Assam.”

He emphasized that these efforts have laid a foundation for sustainable development, enabling families to access essential resources and support.

The impact of these policies is particularly evident in the poverty statistics, with districts like Goalpara and Karbi Anglong witnessing dramatic reductions in their poverty rates.

Goalpara’s rate dropped from a staggering 40.15% to 18.34%, while Karbi Anglong saw a decline from 37.59% to 16.20%. Additionally, Kamrup (Metro) reported a significant improvement, with its poverty rate falling from 25.55% to just 10.28%.

These encouraging figures not only highlight the effectiveness of the state government’s welfare initiatives but also signal a positive trend toward lifting vulnerable populations out of poverty.

As Assam continues to implement and expand these programs, the Chief Minister’s announcement provides hope for further progress in the ongoing battle against poverty in the region.
