Assam: Rupsi Airport Reopens with New Flight Services, Boosting Regional Connectivity in Assam

Guwahati: Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma officially inaugurated the resumption of flight operations from Rupsi Airport on October 17, marking a significant milestone for the region’s connectivity.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of a lamp, symbolizing new beginnings and the restoration of air travel for the local populace.

Starting today, flights will operate three days a week—Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays—linking Guwahati and Kolkata via Rupsi. Sandeep Patil, the officer in charge of Rupsi Airport, announced that the private airline Alliance Air will manage these operations under the central government’s UDAN scheme.

He also revealed plans to expand the service to five days a week later this month in response to increasing demand.

Rupsi Airport initially launched passenger flight services on March 7, 2021, under a three-year contract with the airline “Fly Big.”

Initially providing three weekly flights using a 72-seater aircraft, the service frequency was later increased to six days a week due to rising passenger demand. However, operations were abruptly suspended on November 7, 2023, by “Fly Big,” leaving travelers without essential air connectivity.

Constructed at a cost of nearly ₹100 crore, Rupsi Airport was developed under the UDAN-2 and UDAN-4 schemes, which aim to enhance regional air connectivity across India.

The resumption of flights has brought immense relief and joy to local residents, who have eagerly awaited the return of this vital service.

As the flights recommence, the government hopes to strengthen economic ties and facilitate smoother travel for those in the region, further integrating Rupsi into Assam’s growing network of air transport.
