Nagaland: African Swine Fever Outbreak Reported in Wokha District; Strict Measures Enforced

Kohima: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services in Wokha has confirmed cases of pig mortality linked to African Swine Fever (ASF) in the Doyang Right Bank Farm area.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs, leading to severe economic losses and necessitating immediate action and stringent containment measures.

In response to the outbreak, authorities are implementing protocols under Section 6(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infection and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009.

These measures include restricting the movement of pigs and pork within a 1 km radius of the infected zone, as well as prohibiting the slaughter and sale of pigs and pork in that area.

Furthermore, a surveillance zone extending 9 km outside the infected area will be closely monitored to ensure early detection and control of any further spread.

Proper disposal of deceased animals through deep burial or incineration is mandatory within the infected zone to minimize the risk of transmission.

Village Councils have been urged to maintain vigilance and promptly report any suspected cases of ASF to the nearest Veterinary Office or Officer.

These precautionary steps aim to contain the outbreak and protect the local pig population from this devastating disease.
