Assam: Three Life Sentence Inmates Released from Tezpur Central Jail on Kati Bihu

Guwahati: In a significant move coinciding with the Kati Bihu festival, the Assam government has released three inmates serving life sentences for murder from Tezpur Central Jail.

This release marks a new beginning for the individuals who have spent decades behind bars, as they are now given a chance to reintegrate into society.

The inmates—86-year-old Nabin Talukdar from Thakurbari in Rangapara, 50-year-old Baban Bhumij from Chatia, and 50-year-old Biren Das from Bihali Banhbari—were granted their freedom following a directive from the state government. Nabin Talukdar had been incarcerated since 2009, while both Bhumij and Das had been in custody since 2001.

This decision is part of a broader initiative by the Assam government to review cases of long-serving prisoners and offer relief based on various factors, including age, behavior, and health conditions. By taking such steps, the state aims to provide opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration for those who have shown signs of reform.

For Talukdar, Bhumij, and Das, stepping out into the open air on this auspicious day symbolizes a hopeful future. After nearly two decades or more of confinement, they are now poised to return to their communities and start anew, embracing the possibilities that lie ahead.
