Assam: Former AASU President Lekhan Baruah Joins ULFA-I Amid Speculation of Disappearance

Guwahati: Lekhan Baruah, the former president of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) in Dibrugarh district, has reportedly joined the proscribed insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I).

This development follows his mysterious disappearance from his residence, where he had been unaccounted for approximately ten days, raising concerns among family and local authorities.

Sources indicate that Baruah’s decision to join ULFA-I became apparent after a four-page letter was discovered, which he had addressed to his mother.

The letter, interpreted as a farewell message, suggested his intentions and provided some closure to his family regarding his sudden absence. Prior to his disappearance, Baruah was last known to be in Rahmaria, located within the Lahowal constituency of Dibrugarh.

Baruah’s political journey has been marked by challenges, including an unsuccessful bid in the 2021 assembly elections, where he contested as a candidate for the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) from the Lahowal constituency.

His shift towards ULFA-I has now added a new chapter to his tumultuous political career, igniting discussions about the ongoing influence of insurgent groups in the region.
