Mizoram Commercial Vehicle Owners to Strike Indefinitely Over Fuel Price Hike
Aizawl– Commercial vehicle owners in Mizoram are preparing for an indefinite strike set to commence on October 23, 2024, in protest against the state government’s recent hike in fuel prices.
This decision follows the government’s increase of petrol prices from ₹93.93 to ₹99.24 per litre and diesel from ₹82.62 to ₹88.02 per litre, effective September 1.
The protest has gained momentum despite efforts by Chief Minister Lalduhoma to negotiate a compromise.
On October 17, representatives from 11 vehicle owners’ associations convened and unanimously agreed to initiate the strike, showcasing the deep frustration within the community over the rising operational costs.
In defense of the price increases, the Mizoram government stated that the hikes are necessary to fund vital social infrastructure development and road maintenance projects.
However, the Mizoram Commercial Vehicle Union argues that these increases place an unfair financial burden on the public, especially as many are still grappling with the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the strike approaches, the impact on transportation services across the state is expected to be significant, with vehicle owners uniting in their demand for a reduction in fuel prices.
The outcome of the impending protest may depend on the government’s willingness to reconsider its decision in light of growing public pressure.
As tensions rise, all eyes will be on the state’s response and the potential for negotiations in the coming days.
