Assam CM Launches Mission Basundhara 3.0, Sparking Political Debate Over Land Rights

Guwahati– Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially launched Mission Basundhara 3.0 at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra on Sunday, aiming to provide land rights to the state’s indigenous population. The initiative, however, has ignited a political controversy, with opposition parties voicing strong criticism.

During the launch, CM Sarma defended the program against opposition accusations, stating, “The opposition political parties, Congress and AIUDF, criticised us, but we informed them that Mission Basundhara is an initiative to provide land rights to the indigenous people of the state.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of indigenous communities in Assam.

In addition to land rights, the Assam government introduced Digidoc, a digital directory intended for non-registrable and optionally registrable documents. This new system aims to enhance service delivery and reduce processing times for citizens, further promoting administrative efficiency.

Mission Basundhara 3.0 is the latest iteration of a program that began in October 2021, reflecting the government’s ongoing efforts to streamline land management in the region. In tandem with this launch, the state has also expanded its entrepreneurship support initiative, the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Asom Abhijan (CMAAA).

Launched just days prior, CMAAA 2.0 aims to empower 75,000 aspiring entrepreneurs by providing financial assistance. Beneficiaries can receive up to Rs 5 lakhs for professional courses and Rs 2 lakhs for non-professional courses, marking a significant step toward bolstering the state’s economic growth and self-sufficiency.

The launch events are poised to have a considerable impact on both land rights and entrepreneurship in Assam, although the political discourse surrounding these initiatives remains contentious.
