Congress PCC President Urges Caution Over Candidate Speculations for Assam By-Elections
Guwahati – In a press conference held on October 20, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhupen Borah called on all political parties and the media to avoid spreading rumors regarding candidate selections for the upcoming by-elections in five constituencies across Assam.
Borah specifically addressed the circulating speculation that the Congress party may field former BJP member Jayanta Bora in the Behali constituency, rather than ceding the seat to their ally, the CPI (ML). “I request that no one, whether in Congress or elsewhere, comment on probabilities. All of our leaders have spoken about their capabilities, and I’ve forwarded a report from the five-member Asom Sonmilito Morcha committee to the AICC. The final decision will be taken by the AICC, and we will respect it,” he stated.
Emphasizing unity among opposition parties, Borah reiterated, “The main goal of the Congress party remains clear—defeating the BJP. We may have differences, but our objective is the same.” He urged media personnel and party members to exercise patience and await the AICC’s decision before making further comments on potential candidates.
Reflecting on his own political journey, Borah shared a personal anecdote: “I didn’t get a ticket four times, but I had patience, and now I’m responsible for distributing five tickets.” His remarks highlight the internal dynamics of the party as they prepare for the critical by-elections.
The final decision from the AICC regarding candidate nominations is anticipated to be announced soon, as the Congress party aims to present a united front against the ruling BJP in the state.
