Manipur Police Dismantle Major Extortion Racket, Arrest Six Members of Banned Militant Group

Police in Manipur’s Imphal East district dismantled a significant extortion racket with the arrest of six members of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) on Tuesday. The arrests took place in the Porompat area, targeting key operatives involved in the extortion network.

The six suspects, aged between 20 and 53 years, have been identified as Oinam Abung Meitei, Leimapokpam Hari Meitei, Yaikhom Lukhoi Singh, Oinam Bijen Meitei, Athokpam Inaobi Devi, and Moirangthem Ichan Devi. Police seized nearly Rs 3.89 lakh in cash, three vehicles—including a car and two motorcycles—several mobile phones, and identification documents during the operation.

Authorities revealed that the group had been running an extensive extortion network, preying on private businesses, government offices, and local civilians. The group was also allegedly involved in illegal arms trafficking, further intensifying the impact of their operations in the region.

The arrests mark a significant step in the crackdown on militant activities in Manipur, as the group is known for its aggressive methods to raise funds through illegal means. The investigation is ongoing, with officials probing deeper into the group’s activities to uncover additional links to other illegal networks.
