NHPC Reports Rs 327.67 Crore Loss Due to Landslide at Teesta-V Power Station in Sikkim
Sikkim: State-run hydro power giant NHPC has reported a significant setback after a major landslide impacted its 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station in Sikkim, resulting in an estimated loss of Rs 327.67 crore.
The landslide occurred on August 20, 2024, further adding to the challenges faced by the power station, which was already undergoing restoration work following the devastating flash floods in October 2023.
In a regulatory filing on Tuesday, NHPC confirmed that the power station is currently non-operational.
The damage from the landslide has been classified under material damage, with the estimated loss being communicated to insurance companies.
Teesta-V Power Station, commissioned in 2008, operates as a run-of-the-river scheme with diurnal storage, harnessing the hydro power potential of the Teesta River. Despite its critical role in peaking during the lean season, the facility has been significantly affected by natural calamities, delaying its restoration.
