Itanagar: In a grand event today, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, alongside Lt Gen Gambhir Singh, the General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, officially launched the Tawang International Marathon.
Celebrated as the ‘Queen of High-Altitude Runs,’ this year’s marathon attracted 4,500 participants from across India and the world, taking place near the Indo-Tibet border at a breathtaking altitude of 10,000 feet.
The marathon, which emphasizes civil-military cooperation, is a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and the Arunachal Pradesh government. This year’s theme, ‘Peace & Unity,’ underscores the event’s mission to promote harmony among participants and spectators alike.
Coinciding with United Nations Day, the marathon marks its second edition after the successful inaugural event in 2023. Following this success, Chief Minister Khandu announced on July 4 that the Tawang Marathon would become an annual international event.
He also pledged a grant of Rs 2 crore to support the participation of over 5,000 runners across various categories, including the full and half marathons, as well as 10-kilometre and five-kilometre races.
With a total prize pool exceeding Rs 60 lakh, the Tawang Marathon continues to grow in popularity, attracting an increasing number of runners eager to challenge themselves in the unique high-altitude environment.
The official marathon website, launched on July 10, reported over 4,500 registrations, highlighting the event’s significance for the region and its potential to foster tourism and community engagement in Tawang.
The Tawang International Marathon not only showcases the beauty of Arunachal Pradesh but also embodies the spirit of endurance and camaraderie among participants, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and welcoming nature of the region.
