Assam: Clashes Erupt at Nomination Rally for Tanzil Hussain in Samaguri
Guwahati: A nomination rally for Tanzil Hussain, son of Congress MP Rakibul Hussain, turned chaotic in Samaguri on October 24 as clashes broke out between Congress and BJP workers.
The rally, meant to demonstrate support for Tanzil’s candidacy in the upcoming by-elections, quickly descended into disorder as tensions escalated between the rival groups.
Witnesses reported that the situation intensified when Rakibul Hussain, a prominent Congress figure, stepped out of his vehicle to address the crowd.
Supporters from both parties surged towards him, leading to heated confrontations. Amid shouting and pushing, police had to intervene to disperse the crowds and restore order.
The incident follows a rally on October 22 where Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi joined Tanzil Hussain in a show of support, marking a significant build-up ahead of the November 13 by-elections. If elected, Tanzil could become the youngest MLA in Assam, contesting from Samaguri, a seat previously held by his father.
The Indian National Congress (INC) had earlier announced its candidates for the by-elections across five constituencies in Assam, which became vacant after the Lok Sabha elections. Apart from Tanzil Hussain in Samaguri, the party has fielded Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha for Dholai (SC), Sanjib Warle for Sidli (ST), and Brajenjit Sinha for Bongaigaon.
Rakibul Hussain had previously won a resounding victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of 10,12,476 votes, further boosting the prospects for Tanzil in the upcoming polls.
