Shillong Lajong Crushes 7 Wasa United 9-0 in Spectacular MSL 2024 Opener

Wahiajer — Football fever swept the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex Stadium as fans packed the stands to witness Shillong Lajong’s stunning 9-0 victory over 7 Wasa United in the opening match of the 4th Meghalaya State League (MSL) 2024.

Deibormame Tongper took center stage with a hat-trick, scoring in the 36th, 45+2, and 56th minutes, while teammates Yohaan Benjamin (16’), Iohborlang L Lyngkhoi (18’P), Mebannangkiew Thabah (48’, 50’), Babysunday Marngar (90’+2), and Emanbha Marbaniang (90’+4) each contributed to the scoreboard. Despite both teams boasting previous MSL titles, this encounter showcased Lajong’s dominance in the field.

This year’s MSL includes expanded venues throughout Meghalaya, with Wahiajer hosting the inaugural game. The tournament, organized by the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) and supported by the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, aims to bring high-quality football to more communities across the state.

At the opening ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar commended the MFA’s efforts in promoting football, highlighting the sport’s dual benefits for health and career opportunities. MFA President Hamletson Dohling reiterated these goals, expressing optimism about establishing Meghalaya as a football powerhouse.

In the match, Lajong’s aggressive offense overwhelmed 7 Wasa, with relentless attacks yielding four first-half goals and another five in the second half. Though 7 Wasa United enjoyed support from fans in nearby Jowai, Lajong’s remarkable performance earned admiration from the packed stadium.

The MSL action continues Monday, with matchups across six venues at 2 pm:

  • Group A (Tura): Chipakkore vs. Atong Matgrik
  • Group B (Mawkyrwat): Mawten vs. Khliehmawlieh
  • Group C (Tyrsad): No matches scheduled
  • Group D (Khliehriat): Rymbai Skhenshynriah vs. Rangdajied United
  • Group E (Wahiajer): Seinbhalang Skhentalang vs. Mawtari Myrdon
  • Group F (Shillong): Mawlai vs. Seng Samla Mawmluh
