Arunachal: Indian Army Hosts Half Marathon in Walong to Commemorate 62nd Walong Day

Walong: In a moving tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers during the 1962 Battle of Walong, the Indian Army organized a half marathon on Sunday to celebrate the 62nd Walong Day.

The event, which combined solemn remembrance with spirited participation, attracted 558 runners, including personnel from the Indian Armed Forces, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Roads Organization (BRO), and civilians from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.

Flagging off the marathon was Subedar Narinder Singh Rawat, an Olympian and Commonwealth Marathon runner, who led the participants in honoring the brave soldiers who defended Walong during the Sino-Indian War.

The marathon saw a diverse mix of runners, with men, women, and children enthusiastically taking on the challenge across the scenic but challenging terrain of the Lohit Valley.

The marathon route, characterized by steep ascents and descents, tested the physical endurance of all participants. Runners navigated through picturesque landscapes, showcasing the region’s natural beauty while reflecting on the historical significance of Walong.

To cater to runners of varying experience levels, the event featured three distance categories—21 km, 10 km, and 5 km. Winners in each category were awarded medals and cash prizes, while every participant received commemorative T-shirts as a token of appreciation for their commitment and enthusiasm.

The half marathon served as a poignant reminder of the valor displayed by Indian soldiers during the 1962 battle, while also highlighting the spirit of unity and resilience within the communities of Arunachal Pradesh and neighboring regions.
