Assam: Public Outcry Over Handling of Accident Victims’ Bodies in Mangaldoi
Mangaldoi, Assam – Public outrage has erupted in Mangaldoi, Assam, following the tragic death of a father and his daughter in a road accident and the reportedly insensitive handling of their bodies by police at the scene.
The incident has raised questions about the dignity and care in handling victims of such tragedies.
Reports indicate that the bodies of Mathura Nath Deka and his daughter, Nandita Deka, were wrapped in polythene and dragged by two officers, sparking widespread concern over the lack of respect shown in their treatment.
This approach has caused significant distress among locals and on social media, with many calling for a review of police protocols in handling accident victims.
Assam’s Director General of Police, GP Singh, responded to the incident on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that an inquiry has been launched to investigate both the circumstances of the accident and the conduct of the officers involved. “The inquiry will examine the tragic incident and ensure protocols align with dignity for all citizens,” he stated.
The accident occurred near Saktola in the Darrang district, where Deka was bringing his university-going daughter home for Diwali. The two were traveling on a scooter when they collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside. Eyewitnesses report that both were thrown onto the road, where a passing truck then fatally struck them.
This heartbreaking incident not only highlights the dangers of road obstructions and safety but also underscores a broader call for police reform in handling such sensitive cases.
As Assam awaits the findings of the inquiry, it’s anticipated that the results could lead to reinforced procedures aimed at ensuring respectful and compassionate treatment of accident victims.
