Sikkim Education Department Withdraws Nepali Grammar Books Over Inappropriate Content
Sikkim: The Sikkim Education Department has decided to withdraw two Nepali grammar textbooks from school curriculums statewide following public complaints regarding inappropriate proverbs contained within them.
The affected books, Nepali Madhyamik Vyakaran Ra Rachna for Classes IX and X, and Purvottar Madhyamik Nepali Vyakaran Ra Rachna for Classes XI and XII, have been in use since 2009 when they were adopted based on recommendations from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The decision to pull these books from circulation came after numerous letters from concerned citizens and local organizations prompted an internal review by the department.
The review committee’s investigation validated the public’s concerns, confirming that certain proverbs included in the books were indeed inappropriate for the school setting.
In an official statement issued on October 8, 2024, the Education Department ordered the immediate withdrawal of these textbooks from all schools across the state and instructed that no additional copies be distributed.
The department’s decision underscores its commitment to maintaining educational content that aligns with community standards and values.
The move has been welcomed by local associations and parents, who view it as a positive step in ensuring that school materials reflect the state’s cultural sensitivities and values.
