Kohima, Nagaland — The 16th Finance Commission, chaired by Dr. Arvind Panagariya, arrived in Nagaland on November 4 for a comprehensive three-day evaluation of the state’s fiscal and developmental needs.
Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton greeted the delegation upon arrival at Dimapur Airport, marking the start of a visit expected to have significant implications for Nagaland’s economic future.
The high-level delegation includes commission members Ajay Narayan Jha, Annie George Mathew, and Dr. Manoj Panda, who are set to engage with state officials and local stakeholders to examine Nagaland’s unique developmental requirements. The discussions will focus on critical areas such as infrastructure, social welfare initiatives, and fiscal management, highlighting the challenges faced by one of India’s northeastern states that relies substantially on central government assistance.
During their visit, the delegation is scheduled to tour several historical and cultural sites in Kohima to gain a deeper understanding of the local heritage and the logistical challenges of development in the region.
The Finance Commission’s recommendations, following this assessment, are anticipated to play a crucial role in shaping the future funding and fiscal strategies for Nagaland, helping the state address both current and emerging economic needs.
