Nearly 24,000 Voters to Participate in Second Sinlung Hills Council Election in Mizoram
Aizawl, Mizoram — As three districts in Mizoram prepare for the second Sinlung Hills Council election on Tuesday, a record 23,789 voters are expected to turn out at polling stations, marking a notable increase in participation since the council’s first election in 2019.
District officials have wrapped up final election preparations, with the third and final randomisation of polling staff completed across the districts of Aizawl, Saitual, and Kolasib on Sunday. Roles for counting personnel have also been finalised, ensuring readiness for the polls.
This election sees a record number of 49 candidates, including one woman, vying for 12 council seats. Voting will take place at 38 polling stations, with Aizawl district hosting the largest concentration of 19 polling stations across six constituencies.
Security arrangements have been tightened to facilitate a peaceful voting process. District Election Officer Lalhriatpuia confirmed that all interstate and interdistrict borders were sealed as of Saturday, with secured checkpoints set up at Zokhawthiang, Khawpuar, Zilthawthiang/Vaitin, and Luakchhuah/New Vervek to prevent unauthorized access.
This year’s voter list reflects a rise of 2,875 new voters compared to 2019, with a nearly balanced gender ratio: 11,914 women voters and 11,875 men. Kolasib district will operate seven polling stations across two constituencies, while Saitual district will manage 12 polling stations spanning four constituencies.
This election marks an important step in the governance of the Sinlung Hills Council, with voters eager to elect representatives who will steer the council’s future initiatives.
