Guwahati: In yet another incident of man-animal conflict in Assam, a 63-year-old farmer was trampled to death by a herd of elephants at Areca Tengabari in between Boko and Singra forest area which falls under the West Kamrup Divisional Forest Office.
The deceased has been identified as Warlington W Sangma, a resident of Rajapara near Jongakhuli.
The incident occurred when a group of villagers were guarding the forest land by cultivating paddy.
As per sources, a herd of wild elephants attacked the farmers, dragging Sangma to his death. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the spot.
Following the incident, forest department personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved Sangma’s body, transporting it to Boko police station.
It needs to mention that on 3rd November, a three-year-old wild elephant calf died of electrocution in the same area. The forest reserve had been equipped with electricity connections, allegedly for the conservation of paddy cultivation.
Notably, the Assam government and forest authorities are urged to take immediate action to prevent such tragedies and ensure the peaceful coexistence of humans and wildlife in the area.
