Assam: ‘Bhasha Gaurav Saptah’ Celebrates State’s Linguistic Heritage in Cachar
Guwahati: The ‘Bhasha Gaurav Saptah’, an event dedicated to celebrating Assam’s linguistic heritage, was held on November 9 in Cachar district.
Organized by the Bangla Sahitya Sabha at Silchar’s Banga Bhavan, the event focused on the preservation and development of languages, especially among the younger generation.
Cachar Guardian Minister Jayanta Mallaburah, a key figure at the gathering, highlighted the importance of using modern technology—particularly artificial intelligence—to aid in linguistic preservation. He underscored that language should serve as a unifying force, not as a source of division within communities.
The event also celebrated the recent recognition of five Indian languages, including Assamese and Bengali, as classical languages by the Central Government.
Mallaburah described this recognition as a proud moment for both Assam and the nation. Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, who organized the event, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for their roles in this achievement. He noted that this acknowledgment not only bolsters regional pride but also strengthens the cultural identity of the state.
Several prominent community leaders, including Bangla Sahitya Sabha State President Khagen Chandra Das and Assam Publication Council Secretary General Promod Kalita, echoed the call for unity. They emphasized that every language deserves dignity and stressed the need for harmony between the Assamese and Bengali-speaking communities.
Minister Mallaburah also spoke about the deep, emotional connection people have with their mother tongue, urging everyone to resolve language conflicts respectfully.
The event commenced with a symbolic lighting of a ceremonial lamp, signifying the hope for unity and mutual respect among Assam’s linguistic communities. As part of the celebrations, notable literary contributors such as Dr. Amalendu Bhattacharya and Mahua Choudhury were honored for their significant impact in the field.
The ‘Bhasha Gaurav Saptah’ concluded with a renewed vision for Assam, advocating for a future where language serves as a bridge, fostering unity rather than division. This initiative aims to cultivate respect for all languages in Assam, promoting an era of mutual growth and cultural appreciation.
