Protests Erupt in Assam Demanding ST Status for Moran and Motok Communities

Assam: The All Assam Moran Student Union (AAMSU) led a massive protest on November 10, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Moran, Motok, and six other ethnic groups in Assam.

The protest was triggered by recent remarks made by Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, which were seen as dismissive by the protesting communities.

The demonstrators, frustrated by the central government’s lack of action on the issue, blocked National Highway 37 in Makum, leading to significant traffic disruptions. As part of their protest, they burned effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister Jual Oram, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Tensions escalated during the demonstration, resulting in clashes between the protesters and the police, with several injuries reported.

The AAMSU and other organizations in the region have been actively pushing for the inclusion of the Moran and Motok communities in the ST category, citing historical, cultural, and social factors. They have voiced concerns that the prolonged delay in granting ST status has fostered a sense of neglect and discrimination among these communities.
