Meghalaya: NEHU Student Protests Enter 11th Day, Demand Removal of Vice Chancellor

Shillong—The hunger strike and protests by students of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) reached their 11th day on November 15, as students continue to rally against university administration despite the Ministry of Education’s announcement of a committee to investigate the situation.

Organized by the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), with support from the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU – NEHU Unit), the protests have led to deteriorating health among several participants.

Toniho S. Kharsati, NEHUSU General Secretary, dismissed the formation of the committee, stating it fails to address the students’ primary demand—the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla. Kharsati affirmed that the students remain steadfast, emphasizing that the protests would persist until their demands receive a decisive response.

The protests escalated when NEHUSU President Sandy Sohtun was hospitalized at Shillong Civil Hospital due to health issues arising from the hunger strike. Student leaders have expressed frustration over the administration’s response, which they feel falls short of genuine resolution.

The unrest intensified on November 6, when students locked down the university campus. Their demands include the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, the registrar, and other key officials. Students and supporters continue to rally, determined to see substantive action taken to address their concerns.
