Rahul Gandhi Urges Immediate Action on Manipur Violence Amid Escalating Tensions

Imphal: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Manipur, calling it a “deeply disturbing” situation that demands urgent attention from the Central and State governments.

“The recent string of violent clashes and continuing bloodshed in Manipur is deeply disturbing,” Gandhi said, emphasizing the prolonged crisis in the state since May 2023. He criticized the lack of reconciliation efforts, stating that the situation has persisted for over a year, displacing thousands and causing immense loss of life.

Urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take direct action, Gandhi called for a visit to the conflict-torn region to prioritize peace-building efforts. “I urge the PM once again to visit Manipur and work towards restoring peace and healing in the region,” he said.

In response to fresh violence, curfews have been imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East districts. Internet services have also been suspended for two days across seven districts, including Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, and Churachandpur, to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Protests erupted in the Valley districts following the recovery of six bodies in Jiribam. The victims—three women and three children—were reportedly abducted from a relief camp after a clash between security forces and militants. Their bodies were found in Jirimukh, near the Manipur-Assam border, and sent to Silchar Medical College Hospital in Assam for postmortem examinations.

The unrest has led to mob attacks on the residences of several MLAs. Protesters targeted the home of Sapam Nishikant Singh, damaging gates and bunkers, while the residence of MLA RK Imo in Sagolband, Imphal West, was set on fire, with furniture destroyed and windows shattered.

Meitei organizations have alleged that militants are behind the abduction and killings, further straining relations between the Meitei and Kuki communities. Protests in Imphal’s Khwairamband Keithel demanded justice for the victims and an end to the violence.

Despite multiple interventions, peace in Manipur remains elusive, with communal tensions, protests, and violence continuing to escalate. Gandhi’s appeal for immediate action underscores the urgent need for resolution and reconciliation in the troubled northeastern state.
