Pakyong Literary Festival 2024 Kicks Off, Celebrates Sikkim’s 50th Year

Aritar, Sikkim: The serene Lampokhari Lake in Aritar witnessed the inauguration of the Pakyong Literary Festival 2024 on November 17th. Organized by the District Administrative Centre (DAC) of Pakyong district, this two-day literary extravaganza holds special significance as it coincides with the golden jubilee of Sikkim’s statehood.

The opening ceremony was graced by Puran Kumar Gurung, Minister of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Fisheries Development, as the chief guest. MLA Pamin Lepcha of Gnathang Machong, Zilla Adhyaksha Laden Lhamu Bhutia, and Zilla Upadhyaksha Prabha Pradhan were among the dignitaries present.

This year’s festival is themed around crucial social issues like “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” and “Nasha Mukt Bharat, Nasha Mukt Sikkim.” The event aims to raise awareness and foster intellectual discussions on these pressing matters.

Post the inauguration, Gurung, along with other dignitaries, toured various exhibitions showcasing books, products from Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and interactive zones for student competitions.

The festival commenced with a thought-provoking panel discussion on the declining reading habits among students. Panelists offered insightful presentations and engaged in a lively debate, exploring the reasons behind this trend and potential solutions.

A series of student competitions, including a turncoat debate and an open story-writing contest, added vibrancy to the event. Students showcased their skills and creativity through these competitions.

The festival continues throughout the day, promising a plethora of competitions, exhibitions, and activities. The event is expected to attract a diverse audience, including the District Collector, Additional District Collectors, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, department heads, teachers, and students.
