Assam: Karimganj BEEO Accused of Bribery and Document Destruction
Karimganj, Assam: A serious allegation has been leveled against Manish Das, the Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) of Karimganj’s Ramkrishnanagar block.
It is alleged that Das demanded a bribe of Rs 60,000 from the headmistress of VLP School, Abida Begum, to process documents related to the school’s provincialization.
When Begum refused to pay the bribe, Das is accused of taking drastic measures by deliberately setting fire to the crucial documents. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about corruption within the education department.
The controversy arose after a High Court order mandated the provincialization of VLP School, a private primary school established in 2010. As part of the process, the school’s documents were submitted to the BEEO office.
Begum approached Das to expedite the process of forwarding the documents to Guwahati. However, instead of cooperating, Das allegedly demanded the bribe. When she refused, he resorted to the extreme step of destroying the documents.
Following the incident, Begum filed a formal complaint with the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Education. Taking cognizance of the serious allegations, the Education Secretary, S.N. Choudhury, has summoned Manish Das to appear before the department on November 19.
The department is now investigating the matter and will take appropriate action based on the findings of the inquiry. The outcome of this investigation will be crucial in determining the fate of Das and shedding light on the extent of corruption within the education department.
