62nd Anniversary of the Battle of Nyukmadung: A Tribute to Courage and Sacrifice

Itanagar: The 62nd anniversary of the historic Battle of Nyukmadung was observed at the Nyukmadung War Memorial, nestled between Dirang and Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh, with heartfelt tributes to the bravery of the 62 Infantry Brigade.

The towering 25-foot Chorten at the memorial stands as a solemn reminder of the courage displayed by Brigadier Hoshiar Singh and his soldiers, who fought valiantly against advancing Chinese forces on November 18, 1962. Their heroism has left an indelible mark on India’s military history.

This year’s commemoration brought together veterans, soldiers, families of martyrs, and the local community in a poignant celebration of unity and heritage.

The observance began on November 17 with a cycling rally, Trail of Remembrance, where ex-servicemen and soldiers rode 80 kilometers through rugged terrain, from the Nyukmadung War Memorial to the Phudung War Memorial. The rally culminated in a wreath-laying ceremony honoring Brigadier Hoshiar Singh.

Local schools participated with sketching and speech competitions, where students reflected on themes of bravery, patriotism, and duty, ensuring the legacy of the 62 Infantry Brigade continues to inspire future generations.

The main event on November 18 included a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Nyukmadung War Memorial. Veterans, dignitaries, soldiers, and families of the martyrs came together to pay their respects in a moment of shared pride and gratitude.

The day featured vibrant cultural performances, including patriotic songs, traditional dances by students, and a soulful Tibetan dance by LDL Monastery, Dirang. Soldiers of the Indian Army enthralled the audience with a Bhangra performance and a Gatka demonstration, highlighting the grace and precision of the martial art.

The 30 SSB Battalion added a unique touch with an impressive dog show, showcasing the skill, agility, and loyalty of their canine companions, vital to military operations.

Veterans shared moving accounts of their experiences, filling the air with a deep sense of pride and resolve. The anniversary concluded with a reaffirmation of the enduring legacy of the 62 Infantry Brigade and a collective commitment to honoring their sacrifice.
